Information & Public Affairs

The division communicates more effectively meteorological forecasts and other products for the purpose of enhancing relevance of meteorology to social and economic activities.

The division's role is achieved through using:

Weather Studio
Daily and all year round, LMS through its Weather Studio prepares TV weather forecasts (in Sesotho and English) for televising on the national TV.

Public Awareness
For a warning or a forecast to be effective, it has to be disseminated and presented in a way that allows the intended audience to actually receive, understand, believe and more importantly, act upon the information.

The aims of a public education and awareness programme are:

  • To increase weather literacy and interest in meteorological topics in general, and also ensure that warnings and forecasts provided by the LMS are understable.
  • To build up a high level of awareness of hazards and preparedness and how to deal with them.
  • To strengthen relationships between members of the hazards community to enable emergency management authorities to make well-informed decisions, and to minimise the potential for misinterpretation of information and communication of misinformation to the public.
  • To provide information to the public, explain what types of products and services are available and how to obtain them.

Information Dissemination
Real-time meteorological products such as forecasts and warnings are highly perishable and must be disseminated rapidly in the most efficient way to the intended audience, to be of any use. The most common means of dissemination is the mass media, mainly television, radio and newspapers, whereas facsimile, telephone and pagers can specifically target certain user groups.

Dissemination of Forecasts and warnings

  • TV- Has the advantage of using graphics and therefore enhances the understanding of forecasts.
  • Radio - More effective for reaching large numbers of people and more effective in emergency situations
