SEASONAL OUTLOOK FOR MARCH TO MAY 2012
The country has experienced dry conditions during January to February. These conditions were
experienced due to the high frequency of tropical depressions/cyclones which developed in the
Indian Ocean. During this time of the year, the countries rainfall is mostly due to the advection
of tropical moisture. However, tropical cyclone sucks most of the tropical moisture into it
therefore causing dryness to be experienced in the country.
Meantime, normal to below normal rainfall is expected for March to May period countrywide as tropical depressions/cyclones are anticipated to occasionally develop in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.
Temperatures are expected to be above normal for the period. At this time of the year, strong winds, thunderstorms and hailstorms are occasionally expected to be experienced. The higher temperatures are likely to bring negative impacts to agriculture and water resources, health and other socio economic sectors.
