Extreme Weather

To improve our skill in forecasting extreme weather events, diagnostic studies of these events are carried out with a focus on atmospheric circulation conditions during stages of:

·        Origin

·        Development

·        Dissipation

An example of a recent extreme weather is the heavy-snowfall event that occurred over the country during 1 – 3 August 2006. The heavy snowfall accompanied by very cold and windy conditions resulted from the passage of a well developed cold front with an associated deep upper air trough over the country. Maximum temperatures over most places remained below 10° C during the period with extremely cold conditions experienced on 2 August.
